Crossroads

Crossroads

After installing 23 pavement murals in DC’s Chinatown, Chalk R!ot needed a way to showcase each one’s design and backstory.

I developed a custom map with Mapbox and JavaScript that allowed visitors to find info based on location or which mural interested them.

PROCESS

From the design stage, the murals were initially grouped by proximity (i.e., A1, A2, B1, B2). To simplify the map for visitors, I decided to use a letter system (i.e., A, B, C, D).

Based on visitor needs, they could either scroll through the info box and ‘fly’ to a mural’s location, or click the nearest mural to show its info.

Assuming users would be most familiar with the Google Maps view of Chinatown Park, I labeled murals starting from top left.

I also created a mooncake illustration, turned into bite-sized qr codes.
